Truck-bus crash injures 5 adults, 5 children

by | Oct 13, 2011 | Truck Accidents |

A head-on collision on a Janesville, Wisconsin road sent 10 people to the hospital, half of them children. Reports from Rock Township Sheriff’s deputies and Wisconsin State Patrol say the cause of the truck accident involving a school bus is under investigation.

Truck accident reports indicate a half-sized school bus and a Chevy pickup struck head-on at Happy Hollow and Old Airport Roads at about 7:35 a.m. The drivers of the westbound bus and eastbound truck collided as both drivers were rounding a curve, traveling in opposite directions.

Deputies said most of the occupants of both vehicles were injured, including the 21-year-old pickup truck driver and the 66-year-old school bus driver. Law enforcement officials emphasized that none of the injuries sustained by the accident victims was considered life-threatening.

The Chevy pickup driver and his two passengers, ages 18 and 26, were taken to Janesville Mercy Hospital. Their conditions are unreported. The school bus driver is recovering from a broken sternum in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

A 51-year-old female student aide and five children, between the ages of four and 10, were hospitalized. One boy is in Children’s Hospital in Madison, recovering from a broken leg and pelvis. All of the children on the bus were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

County and state police have not charged either driver in the accident, but the investigation is ongoing. The Rock County Sheriff’s Department Accident Reconstruction Team has taken charge of the case and continues to search for the reason for the crash.
