Avoid casualties this prom and graduation season

On Behalf of | May 12, 2021 | Car Accident |

If you are a Milwaukee parent of teens, you likely share with them the joys of rites of passage like prom and graduation. Celebrating these springtime rituals is an important step on the journey to adulthood for them — and, also, typically lots of fun.

But that fun can be permanently dampened when tragedy strikes as a result of impulsive actions or poor decision-making on the part of these young and inexperienced drivers.

Two die in a wreck on the way to prom

Earlier this month in another state, two high school students died in a crash with another high school student. Two other students riding in the same car with the fatally injured couple also suffered injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. The student in the other vehicle was uninjured in the collision.

While it is unclear what caused the crash, law enforcement does not believe from preliminary reports that alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. The accident did not occur late at night, either, which is often a time of enhanced danger for teenage drivers. Reports from the Hamilton County sheriff’s office north of Indianapolis state that a fatal collision happened at approximately 5:15 p.m. as the car full of students headed out to enjoy the festivities.

Discuss safe driving with your teens

Instead of one serious talk with your teens on the dangers of deriving, develop an open and welcoming relationship with them where you can share your concerns and listen to theirs in a series of ongoing and evolving conversations where you discuss how they can remain safer yet still enjoy all the fun activities surrounding prom and graduation.

If your teen gets injured in a wreck

If your teen is younger than 18, as their parents, you must also be their legal advocates to assure that they receive all the compensation they deserve after an accident that injures them. An attorney can help you learn more.
