A salmonella outbreak in the state of Wisconsin has been linked to peas that were sold at farmers markets. As of the middle of August, seven people have been infected with salmonella across four counties in Wisconsin. They reportedly ate fresh shell peas that were sold at farmers markets. Four patients are from Brown County.
The investigation into the salmonella outbreak is being handled by the following entities:
- Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS)
- Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP)
- Four local health departments
The peas were purchased on July 22, 2017 at farmers markets located in Green Bay, Fond du Lac and Madison. The farmers markets in question are typically held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Visitors to these farmers markets are being advised to throw away any fresh shell peas purchased between July 19 and Aug. 15, 2017, even if the peas have since been frozen. The peas from this outbreak are no longer available for purchase.
The common symptoms of salmonella poisoning include the following:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal cramps
- Fever
- Vomiting
