Car accidents, concussion and questions for your doctor

by | Jul 19, 2019 | Car Accidents |

A concussion is one of the most common car accident injuries, as it’s possible your head will come in contact with the windshield, window or steering wheel.

If you have reason to believe you’ve suffered a concussion, seek immediate treatment at a local hospital. Your doctor will run a variety of tests to provide an accurate diagnosis.

It’s important to listen to the advice of your doctor, but you should also ask questions that pertain to your specific situation. Here are some of the most common:

  • Am I permitted to drive? Generally speaking, you shouldn’t drive shortly after a concussion as you don’t want to risk another head injury. Also, you shouldn’t drive if you’re taking pain medication that can cause drowsiness.
  • When can I return to work? It’s important to get plenty of rest after a concussion, as this helps speed up your recovery. Your doctor can recommend a good time to return to work, based on your career and severity of your injury.
  • Is it okay to partake in physical activity? While you can do so eventually, you don’t want to jump into this too soon. It increases the risk of another head injury, as well as lingering symptoms.

If you suffer a concussion in a car accident, let your medical team guide you during your treatment and recovery.

It’s also important to file a car insurance claim, while seeking other ways to obtain compensation from the negligent party. By protecting your legal rights, you can minimize the impact of the accident on your personal life and finances.
