How to drive safely around commercial trucks

On Behalf of | Oct 18, 2019 | Truck Accidents |

It doesn’t matter if you’re on the highway or a city road, you could find yourself in close proximity to a commercial truck. In fact, depending on the roadway, it’s not out of the question for there to be just as many commercial trucks as passenger vehicles.

It’s not always easy to drive safely around commercial trucks, but there are some steps you can take to avoid trouble:

  • Share the road: Even if a trucker is driving in a reckless and/or aggressive manner, do your part in sharing the road with them.
  • Avoid blind spots: Due to the large size and high profile of commercial trucks, there are many blind spots these drivers must contend with. Avoiding these blind spots enhances your safety.
  • Pass on the left only: It may be tempting to pass a slow-moving commercial truck in the right lane, but it’s dangerous to do so. Use the left lane to pass other vehicles, and then move back into the right lane as space allows.
  • Focus on defensive driving: From driving the speed limit to planning for the unexpected to leaving a greater following distance, defensive driving can help you prevent an accident.

Even if you follow these safety tips, other drivers may neglect to do so. This is particularly true of commercial truckers.

If you’re injured in an accident with a commercial truck, move to safety and focus your immediate attention on your health.

Once you receive treatment and understand your injuries, file an insurance claim and learn more about your legal rights when it comes to obtaining compensation from the negligent trucker.
