How to spot drunk drivers this holiday season

On Behalf of | Nov 7, 2019 | Car Accidents |

It doesn’t matter if you’re driving in a big city like Milwaukee or a smaller town, there’s always a chance you could find yourself in close proximity to a drunk driver. This is particularly true during the holiday season, as more people are likely to consume alcohol at parties.

Here are some of the telltale signs that a person may be under the influence of alcohol:

  • Tailgating
  • Quick deceleration and acceleration, such as at traffic signals
  • Driving the wrong way on a one-way road
  • Driving anywhere other than the road, such as in a bicycle lane
  • Striking or almost striking an object, such as a parked car or stop sign
  • Erratic braking
  • Swerving and difficulty staying in their lane of travel
  • Stopping for no reason
  • Aggressive driving

If you spot a drunk driver, your first instinct may be to tell them to get off the road. Doing so can make things worse, as it’ll take the person’s attention away from the road, increasing the chance of an accident.

If the person is putting you and others in danger, make note of their location as well as the make and model of their vehicle. You can then pull to safety, call 911 and explain the situation to the dispatcher.

In the event that a drunk driver strikes your vehicle, check yourself and passengers for injuries, call 911 and don’t delay in receiving medical treatment.

Once your health is stable, contact your insurance company and collect information pertaining to the accident. This will lead you to learn more about the many ways to obtain compensation from the drunk driver.
