A look at the challenges truckers face

On Behalf of | Nov 3, 2020 | Truck Accident |

Almost everything you buy has traveled on a truck at some point. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics reports that trucks move 71% of the freight in the country. Even if something traveled part of the way via air or rail, it probably covered one leg on a truck. So, for the time being, at least, trucks are essential.

A study by the University of Arkansas looked at some of the issues truck drivers face. By understanding these, you can reduce the risk you are in a truck crash:

  • Time pressure: Consumers now expect the same day or next day delivery on many goods. Customers expect stores to have everything in stock all of the time. That means trucking companies place tighter deadlines on their drivers. Drivers also complained about the electronic logging devices now installed in all rigs. They felt less able to stop for an extra break as they think they are being watched. Few people drive well when they are in a rush.
  • Loneliness: Being away from family for days or weeks at a time is tough. A trucker may know their wife had a critical medical check-up and wants to call to see how she is. However, when driving to a deadline, they may feel unable to stop, so they call while on the move instead.
  • Health: Long hours and insufficient sleep can weaken drivers’ immune systems, leaving them prone to illness. Stopping to see a doctor will cut into their driving time, so many carry on regardless. Even something as simple as a cold can have a significant effect on their ability to drive safely.
  • Lack of respect: Those surveyed said they felt disrespected by bosses and other road users. They think they are doing a vital job, keeping the nation supplied, yet are often poorly treated and looked down upon.

When driving your car or riding your motorcycle close to a truck, bear these things in mind. Assume drivers may not be at their best. Allowing trucks an extra bit of space and time could save you from a truck accident.
