Holiday driving presents special hazards

On Behalf of | Dec 8, 2020 | Automobile Accident |

If you will be doing any of your holiday shopping in brick-and-mortar stores — or are simply on the road for your commute or other errands — you should be aware that this time of year presents its own set of driving hazards.

But being aware of the problem can help you to keep yourself and your family safer when out on the roads of Milwaukee. Below are four seasonal driving hazards to avoid.

Drivers under pressure

People often feel intense pressure before the winter holidays to get everything just right — the decorations, the gifts, the holiday meal. These all can bring financial stressors right at the time when belts may have been tightened due to lay-offs.

Motorists who are engrossed in thought over these holiday stresses might drive aggressively or even recklessly. Do your best to avoid being in proximity to them on the roads.

Fatigued driving

The holidays can be exciting, but they can also be tiring. This is especially true if you are driving long distances to a holiday destination. Everyone should remember to only drive when well-rested and to take frequent breaks when on long trips.

Distracted drivers

Taking a call behind the wheel is dangerous year-round, but just before the winter holidays, old friends and relatives often reach out to connect. If you are driving and don’t want to miss their call, find a safe spot to pull over and call them back.

Impaired drivers

The winter holidays are often accompanied by increased alcohol usage for many adults. At office parties, family get-togethers and celebrations with friends, alcohol can flow freely, leaving those motorists with the choice of driving home intoxicated or seeking other arrangements. Sadly, not all make the best choice.

Seek justice after a holiday accident

Should you have the misfortune to be struck by another at-fault motorist, it is important to understand your rights to seek financial compensation and civil justice through the Wisconsin courts.
