Officer injured in rollover crash caused by blown stop sign

On Behalf of | Jan 26, 2021 | Automobile Accident |

If a driver is approaching an intersection and doesn’t take the time to stop at a stop sign, there is a great risk that they could hit another vehicle. Unfortunately, that is what happened in this case out of Milwaukee.

A police officer had to be taken to the hospital for their injuries after a driver heading north on 58th Street entered the intersection without stopping at a four-way stop. As a result, the driver hit the police cruiser and forced the vehicle to roll over.

Despite the severity of the impact, the driver fled the scene. The 40-year-old man was caught shortly thereafter. It wasn’t clear if they were intoxicated or if there were other causes leading to the crash. However, the driver is now facing pending charges.

Four-way stops are there to prevent crashes, but they don’t always work

Four-way stops are designed to prevent collisions by requiring drivers in every direction to stop before entering the intersection. There could be many reasons why a driver wouldn’t stop, such as:

  • Driving while distracted
  • Drinking and driving
  • Medical emergencies

Unfortunately, regardless of the reason, entering an intersection without stopping could cause a serious crash.

What should you do if you’re hit in an intersection?

If you are hit while passing through an intersection, it’s important to call 911 and wait for the police to arrive. Don’t apologize or try to work out who was at fault. It is the insurance companies and the police who will investigate to come up with an answer to that question. In the meantime, you should seek medical care and get in touch with your attorney, so you can begin the claims process for your injuries.
